Week 13 - Almost Done !!!

Man, this guy has been putting it to us, huh friends? I mean, sure, we are learning about many tools, but come ON! Work IN ADDITION to our final projects? This is the one course in which I actually feel like I'm studying for a degree...

So, in addition to the million things which we have to do this week (teachers don't co-ordinate with each other so they don't know how much work you have every week which is the reason they feel comfortable giving you as much as they want because they think that their own course is the only one you have) we also have to update our blogs... Let's see what's up over at Edudemic first...

Apparently, there are a myriad of tools which can be used online in conjunction with exercising. From heart rate monitors and fitness trackers to apps like Coach's Eye, the internet is rife with these option which you can customize to help you, direct you, nudge you and force you to do your daily exercises and even give you feedback.
Feedback? How in the name of The Seven is it going to do that?

Well, I'm glad you asked.
Let's talk about this app called Coach's Eye for a second. What it is, is an app that records athletes and provides instant feedback on performance. So if you have a certain sport that you like but don't have any pros with you or a teacher or someone who knows it better than you do, this app can give you the correction to performance that you need. Good, huh? Just pay attention to the fact that you can't film more than one person at a time... It can't select one person out of 5 or 10 people who are in a video - it only works on that 1 person who was filmed.

Next up....
Are you all familiar with the "Who Was" books? I first laid eyes on them at the ETAI conference about 2 years ago at Levinsky. Basically it's a bunch of books that are for kids or teenagers and tell you about world history and American history. The cool thing is that they don't only deal with people who are in the school curriculum, they also tell you about really cool people like Milton Hershey, Genghis Khan, Henry Ford and others...

So why am I telling about these books on my Tech blog? Well, they are going through a re-publishing now in Kindle format which means that you can read them on your E-reader! If you like E-readers of course... I like mine.
They nice thing is that they keep the pictures and you can still get the same feel of the book that way.
Each book is around 60 pages log so no big commitment when reading any of these. I use them frequently when I teach English, there are so many of them (over 130 books and counting) that you can really find someone for everyone.

Week 10 - Research Tools

Week 10 - Research Tools

So.... what a bummer. The first two research tools that I tried were dead ends.... SOMEBODY isn't doing his homework and checking that these resources are still relevant.... Wonder who that could be ;)

Oh my, which do you mean?

Well, both the link for IDEA (http://idebate.org/portal) and the Google Hot Topics (https://cse.google.com/cse/home?cx=006111857505466247030:uowgzh-ei7i) weren't very effective. The Idebate one is a DEAD link and the Google Hot Topics search gave me results which had nothing to do with what I was looking for. For example:
I typed in the word SPACE for Hot Topics regarding space, but it came up with some irrelevant articles about clearing your room to make for more SPACE. Yeah..... not what I was looking for. A better way to do what I wanted would've been to go to the regular Google search, and then once it gives you the finding, press on NEWS and you would have gotten the most current "HOT ARTICLES" about space..... Like that alien megastucture (Dyson Sphere) that they think is built around KIC 8462852
.

Personally, since Google arrived on the scene with its myriad of search filters, I don't see much use for most other searches.
The one thing that I didn't know and that will open up MY world as far as a teacher is that Wikipedia had a SIMPLE VERSION (https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) which I will definitely use as reading material for my pupils who need quick info or even for topics of lesson planning. So the award goes to..... (drumroll, please.... )

By the way - Stay away from the Knovio tool (presentation tool) - signing in to it after you have gone through the registration process is harder than trying to understand why people like Pink Floyd so much.

This week one of the things that caught my attention the most was this post from Technology Tailgate, which is one of the Tech sites I am currently following. Interestingly enough, what attracted me about it is that it ties in to the research question that I am working on for this year's seminar.
My research question has a lot to do with what school can do in order to help push pupils towards their professional goals (if hey have such) early on in their lives so as not to waste their time.
The title of the post is:

The 10 Most Important Work Skills in 2020

Here's a nice image of it:

This is a very important post for anyone who believes in forwarding our children and students towards skills that they will definitely be able to use in the future. I believe that schools and even governments should always be following what skills are developing in the modern world, especially the tech world in order to
make sure that our next generations' many young talents don't go to waste.
Children who have an attraction or a tendency for math and equations or even children who show an affinity for languages could learn how to code at a reasonably young age, while kids who like to draw could be introduced to programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator and In Design  or even some 3D programs such as Maya, Zbrush and Mudbox.

Preparing our children and pupils for the future is one of the most important things that we can do, and it's a very positive things that there are as many posts as there are for this type of learning.

WEEK 3 - Tools

Good Day, People!
Lets get right to it....

A
So, I thought the whole Wordle thing was cute, and nice in a visual way, but I don't know that our esteemed leader's reasoning for using it is exactly right.

1) Students can use it to monitor the frequency of word usage in their own writings and to see if they're overusing words.

Yeah....No. I can't see students or pupils going into an internet tool in the middle of a writing assignment and checking their use of words. Also, the writing assignments are usually done in class, so no access to Wordle while you're in the middle of that. NEXT PLEASE....

2) Students can use it to analyze news articles.

From my experience, they're not gonna do that.
We spend so much time teaching pupils and students techniques to use so they can get the gist of the text in front of them and when we do this we are teaching them to learn how to do this ON THEIR OWN. Not with the use a tool like Wordle, because again, while they are working they will simply in most cases not have access to the tool. Besides... who's gonna rewrite their text into the computer just to check what it's about or what the author wants from me? They can do that by reading the first and last paragraph of the text.

3) Teachers can use it for field trip reviews. Have each student generate a list of what they saw or learned on the field trip. Combine the list, copy and paste into Wordle. Whoop! You have an instant “What’s Important List” from the field trip.
I liked this more. I think that using it as a way to asses things about experiences or songs that you liked is a more interesting way of using this tool.

The Lesson Plan using Wordle
I liked the lesson plan that was given to us as an example of how to incorporate Wordle into our lessons. I would use Wordle to give the class their vocab for a test or to do something like giving them their Wordle from a text and then tell them to find as many synonyms as they can for something like the top 10 words that appear in their Wordle.

B
For my "Word a day" I'm going with "WordThink". I initially was thinking about "A Word A Day" but thought the main story about how there doesn't exist a word for 22nd Anniversary was stupid and silly, and so decided to veto that site.

Wordthink has vocab that isn't as advanced as A Word A Day ("rebus" was today's word on Word a Day, while "nexus" took center stage over at WordThink) but still, it is fitting for my Yud class. Here:

I also liked the "Quote of the day" feature. Quotes interest me more than single words. Especially TV quotes like Tywin Lannister's :

NEXT UP: TEXT PROFILER

I really liked this because now I have a easy way of selecting automatically the most important of difficult words from a text for my students. I don't have to rummage through the text and list them myself, it is done for me in a fast, effective way. Thanks Mr. Roos.

In addition to what I've written here, I'm also definitely going to be using the following:
* Qulizlet
* Crossword Maker
* Wordsearch Maker

I don't trust the Text Summarizer because I will always worry that maybe it missed something. I'm just not the type of person to rely on that type of Tool.

Followed Blog #3 - Edudemic

Easily the prettiest blog of the three that I'm covering, this site has some amazing articles. There is so much to go back to in this site, that you could tell the team that writes this blog to hold up for a few weeks until you catch up, but honestly I think it's great what they're doing.
The plus of having an entire friggin' TEAM behind this site as well as this amazing site design shows us that funding is NOT one of this teams problems, and it's us as teachers who end up reaping the benefits, of course.

There's this one post that I really liked about various techniques to Improve a pupil's self image, which is a subject so important and serious that some teachers just don't know how to approach, especially when there are so many pupils who need that attention and help.

17 resources for improving their self image

That sums up my content writing for the week, Let's see what you got up your sleeves for next week, Abe Roose !
